Visiting Merrick, New York For those who wish to leave behind the bright lights and frenetic pace of the Big Apple a trip to the hamlet of Merrick (only 32 miles from downtown Manhattan), in Nassau County, NY can prove to be immensely rewarding. This small town can be found nestled within the greater town of Hempstead, which in turn is situated on Long Island’s North Shore. The name 'Merrick' is derived from the native Algonquian word for 'peaceful' ('meroke') a name by which it was known by the original inhabitants of the area, the Meroke Native Americans. If visitors to New York State are in search of peace, and a destination that boasts a more leisurely pace than that of the big city - then the 22,000 residents of Merrick are more than happy to play their part in providing a heartfelt welcome. Although not large in area (52 acres), Merrick has a variety of attractions and destinations that will be of interest to the visitor, including the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve. The Preserve was opened in 2000 and acts as both a refuge for local flora and fauna - and a place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the fresh air and leisure opportunities afforded by the green space. It features two man-made ponds (and a kayak launch site at the original Meadow Brook). Hikers will enjoy the three miles of paths available and joggers using those same trails can take advantage of the exercise stations along the paths. The 500-foot pier that stretches into Merrick Bay offers great opportunities for fishing. The Merrick Library is also well worth a visit, if only for its history. It was established in 1891 with a grand total of fifty volumes, which found their home in the original building, the hay loft of a vacant stable. Locals and those visiting Merrick have access to some tremendous dining destinations that feature menus inspired by cuisine from Southwestern U.S., Continental Europe, Southeast Asia, and many other regions. Worthy of special mention are Mustachio's Deli which has fantastic subs (and other menu offerings) and Guy Anthony's for great Bistro-style Italian offerings. Those visiting the New York area should take some time off to explore the gentle wonders of Merrick. It offers the perfect antidote to fast-paced modern life.
